Inspired by a summer swim at Pool Bridge Farm, Making a Splash brings together the peacefulness of wild swimming with a much more personal story.

At the centre of the painting is a pigeon taking an unapologetically joyful dip, surrounded by rippling water, lily pads and a tiny rubber duck. The bright swimming cap and playful details bring a sense of humour and warmth to the scene, while the surrounding landscape reflects the quiet beauty of Pool Bridge Farm.

The pigeon also carries a deeper meaning for me. Following the loss of my dad, I began noticing birds as little reminders of him and of the people we carry with us after they’re gone. What began as a personal connection has gradually become a recurring theme throughout my work.

For me, this painting is about finding moments of joy in unexpected places — a swim on a summer’s day, a familiar bird, and the little reminders of someone we miss. It is playful on the surface, but underneath it is a painting about memory, connection and making a splash while we’re here.
