This painting is a playful and affectionate tribute to my dad, inspired by the way robins are often thought of as little reminders of loved ones who have passed. Rather than choosing a robin, I imagined my dad returning in a much more unexpected—and slightly ridiculous—form: a pigeon.

The pigeon represents that quirky, familiar presence that seems to appear when you least expect it. There’s something wonderfully ordinary and comedic about a pigeon, which makes the symbolism feel personal rather than sentimental. Here, the pigeon carries an enormous sunflower, creating an almost absurd contrast between its everyday character and the grand gesture it is attempting to make.

The sunflower itself represents warmth, love, and remembrance, while the mountainous landscape and setting sun create a sense of peace and reflection. Together, these elements turn an ordinary pigeon into a humorous messenger from the past—a reminder that those we love can continue to feel present in the most unexpected places.
